CASTLE HAYNES:

Adjoining The Hermitage on the north was Castle Haynes, named for the owner, Captain Roger Haynes.  He married Margaret, daughter of Rev. Richard Marsden, who owned both Castle Haynes and The Hermitage.  The two daughters of Captain Haynes, married Burgwyn and General Hugh Waddell.  The brother of Mrs. Waddell gave her Castle Haynes, where both she and General Hugh Waddell are buried.  He died before the Revolution.  He was ranking officer of the Province, having been almost continuously in service in the French and Indian Wars for nearly twenty years.  General Waddell died in his thirty-ninth year.  His biography was written by the late Colonel Alfred Moore Waddell, one of his descendants, and was published in 1891.

This section of New Hanover County now noted for its beautiful flower farms.
